Course Descriptions

At Blue Warrior Institute, we offer much more than the state minimum required instruction.  Every Scholar will leave the classroom with a clear understanding of what the subject matter is, how it applies to them, and how it applies on the street.  We know that when you're confronted on the battlefield you will not "rise to the occasion"; you will default to your last level of training.  If  your training is basic, so will your response be to someone trying to take your life.  So goes our saying, "Good enough, isn't".  BWI Security Officer Academy Information  Classes in red meet the requirements for Tennessee P.P.S. certifications.

Basic Unarmed Security Officer (12 hrs)

In this basic course, you will get the state mandated 4 hr block of instruction mandated by the Private Protective Service.  We will build on that by talking about the Officer Survival mindset, instruct you in the proper use of handcuffs, and get into basic defensive tactics.
Impact Weapon Training

(6 hrs)

This block of instruction will give you the information you need in properly deploying an expandable or side handle baton in the field.  We will discuss the force continuum, maintains of your baton, proper deployment, and DRILLS, DRILLS, DRILLS !!!!
Defensive Chemical Spray (4 hrs)
This course will offer the student the understanding of what a Chemical Spray is, why it works, and more importantly, what to do when it doesn't work.
Taser

(8 hrs)

In this course the Student will spend time understanding the Taser.  We will explain exactly what it does, how it works, and give them all the tools they need to win the court battle afterwords.  We will explain why it is that Taser does not kill people.  We will talk about Excited Delirium and the proper deployment of Taser for that type of suspect.
Armed Guard Training

(16 hrs)

In this block of instruction, the student will get the state mandated 4 hr class and 4 hr range time.  On top of that, we will add reload drills, malfunction drills, and spend a lot of time on Use of Force Continuum, Deadly Force laws, Self-Defense laws, and a full 8 hrs on the range. (student must supply his or her own ammunition: 150-200 rounds)
Advanced Patrol Tactics

(6-8 hrs depending on class size)

In this block of instruction, the officer will learn proper building clearing, vehicle approaches, and using cover.  This course has very little classroom time and will be spent mostly in the field.  Dress appropriately.
Defensive Tactics

(4-40 hrs)

This class can be as long or as short as you choose depending on what the student needs addressed. We offer basic hold breaking, ground fighting, punch and kick drills, and a block of instruction on the Sympathetic Nervous System and how it effects the Officer.  Whatever you need in unarmed confrontation management, Blue Warrior has the Instructor for it.
Reactive Knife Defense

(8-40 hrs)

This class is great for the unarmed officer, the retail Loss Prevention officer, as well as the armed officer. Most knife attacks happen before the Officer knows he is being attacked and he is usually cut several times before getting his gun out of his holster.   A basic overview of knife defense can be done in 8 hrs, but to become proficient, drills are needed.
Advanced Combat Handgun

(12 hrs)

Anyone can put holes in targets from 15 yards away, but in combat, that is not the time to realize that static target shooting is not good enough.  At Blue Warrior Institute, we address the dynamics of combat with tried and true forms of combat shooting. Here the student will take his skills past the static shooting line and learn to shoot and move, shoot from behind cover, support hand shooting, reload and malfunction drills, and will end the course with point shooting drills.  (student must supply ammo - 200 rounds)

P.P.S. Card Required

Advanced Combat Shotgun

(6-8 hrs depending on class size)

The student will learn the fundamentals of shotgun use in law enforcement. He will then move on to shooting while moving, reloading while moving, positional shooting, shooting from behind cover, and transitioning from pistol to shotgun and back to pistol.

P.P.S. Card Required

Weapon Retention and Disarming

(6 hrs)

In this block of instruction, the student will learn how to win attacks to his weapon while it's in the holster and at ready pistol.  He will learn when attacks are made, how they are made,  what to do to keep his pistol, and the proper follow up techniques to combat attempted weapon disarming.  The student will also learn tactics to disarm the suspect if he looses his pistol or if the suspect has one pointing at him.  A must for anyone who carries a firearm.
